Overview

Mayer Brown's environmental practice area (MBEPA) is one of the premier environmental law groups in the country. MBEPA's growth has been fueled by its many successes in all fields of environmental law, from victories in the courtroom and before administrative tribunals to helping clients avoid or manage every kind of environmental issue. The practice includes three general areas of specialty:

Environmental Litigation: civil enforcement actions, criminal investigations and actions, toxic torts, statutory clean-up actions, natural resource damage claims, private contractual actions for cleanup costs, challenge to governmental action/permitting appeals, environmental disasters, takings/condemnation, insurance coverage.

Environmental Issues in Transactions: REITs, mergers and acquisitions, lending, leasing, international.

Environmental Compliance: land contamination and brownfields issues, waste and materials management; permitting, operational changes, and facility expansion; construction, development, and siting of new facilities; audits and problem-spotting; information management; changes in laws, regulations and rulemaking.

Our hallmarks are broad experience and ability. MBEPA has been counseling clients on environmental matters and litigating environmental disputes since the early 1970s, when Congress first enacted the cornerstone Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act legislation. We regularly try and win high profile cases; conduct due diligence and negotiations on hundreds of significant transactions across the country and internationally; negotiate and appeal permitting issues; comment on and challenge proposed regulations; and advise on every kind of environmental issue.
